Conservation Area Appraisals are written for several reasons:
- To understand more fully the character and special interest of the area
- To promote the special interest of the area to everyone
- To consult with the public about what they feel is special about their area and incorporate this into the documents
- To include elements such as landscape, archaeology, history, special features of interest and good unlisted buildings
- To provide helpful guidance to members of the public who might wish to make planning applications
- To provide useful documentation to refer to when making planning decisions
- To defend these planning decisions at appeal
