Applying for a Garage

We own over 1,000 garages across Mid Devon. Please see pdf icon Garage Location List [6kb] for a list of locations for our garages and ground rent plots. We offer reasonable rents for our garages and ground rent plots. Any local resident can rent them, but Council tenants get priority.

If you would like to rent a garage, please complete the online form. For a list of garages currently available, please see pdf icon Vacant Garages 17-04-13 [50kb]. If you would like more information, please email htenancy@middevon.gov.uk.

Mid Devon District Council tenants who are in rent arrears will not be offered a garage.

Who can apply for a garage/rent plot?

Anyone over 16 years of age who is eligible may apply. Persons under the age of 18 will need an adult to act as a "legal guardian" for the tenancy until their eighteenth birthday.

Businesses may also apply for a garage for storing any vehicle used for business purposes. However, they cannot use the garage for any other purpose.

Registered charities can rent garages at a reduced amount as long as we see proof of charitable registration.

Who is not eligible?

We will not allow anyone guilty of unacceptable behaviour (within the last two years) to hold a tenancy with us. Examples include:

  • Rent arrears or breach of tenancy conditions.
  • Acts of anti-social behaviour.
  • Allowing Council property to be used for illegal purposes.
  • Serious damage or neglect of a Council property.
  • Lying to us or not giving us information that we would need.
  • Threatening, or being violent or abusive against Council staff.

Use of garages/rent plots

Garages tend to be unsuitable for storing goods and belongings because they are susceptible to water damage (such as damp).

You will need our written permission before using a garage to store anything other than a car or motorcycle. Garages / rent plots cannot be used to park a vehicle that is untaxed, un-roadworthy or uninsured.

All tenants will need to sign a Tenancy Agreement when renting a garage / rent plot from us. You will agree to abide by a number of conditions (please see our Garage Management Policy for more information).
