| MDDC PRESS RELEASE At the Thursday 4 February meeting Mid Devon District Council's Executive recommended a 1.5% increase in council tax for 2010/11, one of the lowest rises in Mid Devon since the start of council tax in 1993. This would be achieved without proposing any reductions in frontline services much valued by the public, such as grounds maintenance and street cleaning services. The Executive also recommended an average increase in Council housing rents of 1.93%. A final decision on both the council tax and housing rent increases will be made when the Full Council sets the budget on 24 February. Commenting on the recommendation Finance Portfolio Holder Councillor Neal Davey said "I am delighted that we are able to maintain our front line services while proposing one of the lowest ever council tax increases. "Our financial situation has greatly improved over the past couple of years due to our prudent financial management and we are better placed than many other councils, some of whom are being forced to make cuts in services this year. "We have been through a very rigorous budget-setting process asking service managers to make financial savings and improve efficiency while maintaining services at current levels. "This year's budget round has been against a financial outlook that remains bleak for local authorities, with the very real possibility that central government will make significant cuts to local government funding in future years order to help reduce the national debt." |
