Uplowman Parish CouncilThe village of Uplowman, situated four miles north east of Tiverton, is at the heart of a scattered rural Parish of 1200 hectares and 238 electors. There is uncertainty over the origins of the village name and that of the stream that passes through it. A most likely derivation must be from the old British word 'lowmene', meaning slow-moving river. About half the residents live around Uplowman Cross where there is a Sub-Post Office and the Redwoods Inn provides excellent hospitality. St Peter's Church has nestled in the shelter of Uplowman Hill since the mid 15th Century and is now served by the Sampford Peverell Team Ministry. Contact the Wardens (01884-258252 or 820868) for details of services.
Generations of village children have attended Uplowman Church of England Primary School (Head Teacher Mrs Janet Norris, 01884-820552) since its construction in 1874. There are at present about 55 on the roll; crafts and music are taken very seriously at the same time as regularly achieving high standards in all the current requirements of the National Curriculum.
Uplowman Athletic's football and cricket field is to the south of the cross roads, beside the Village Hall. Regular activities here include drama classes, a Mother and Toddlers group, Sequence dancing and three nights of Badminton. The venue is much in demand for parties and receptions.
