Residents are being warned about a new scam offering a council tax refund in order to obtain payment details.

Residents have reported that they've been contacted by fraudsters using GOV.UK branding in text messages. The message reads:

'Your Recent Council Tax Payment is over paid , check the amount and claim refund now as the due date end soon via thank you'

If you receive a text message like this, please delete and block sender. Do not reply, click any links or disclose bank account details or any other personal information.

We never ask for your bank details over the phone.
