What is the Independent Remuneration Panel?

Our organisation comprises 42 councillors who are elected to determine the council's policies and priorities. Councillors undertake a wide range of roles and receive a Basic Allowance and sometimes a Special Responsibility Allowance, in accordance with our Members’ allowances scheme.

The Independent Remuneration Panel advises us on the Members’ allowances scheme. We must have regard to this advice when reviewing or amending the scheme.

Who can be a panel member?

Applicants should:

  • Be over 21
  • Not be a member of any Town, Parish or District Council
  • Not have any active connections with any political party

What is required of a panel member?

We're looking for volunteer Panel members who are able to make informed, impartial contributions to Panel meetings and then make recommendations to us. You should have some understanding of the roles and responsibilities of councillors and the operation of a local authority. Ideally you'll also have a general awareness of remuneration levels in the public and private sectors.

The work will entail attending one or two initial briefings / training sessions and then around one or two meetings per year, together with some telephone and email contact in order to finalise reports. Travel expenses are payable.
