SALARY: £38,296 - £41,496 (pay award pending)
LOCATION: Tiverton
Mid Devon is an attractive rural district in the agricultural heartland of Devon, between Dartmoor, Exmoor and the Blackdown Hills. It is accessible from the M5 motorway and Great Western Mainline railway and is close to Exeter city. The district has over 2000 listed buildings, 51 Conservation Areas, 49 Scheduled Monuments, 3 registered parks and gardens and 16 locally important parks and gardens.
An exciting opportunity as has arisen for an experienced, enthusiastic and self-motivated Conservation expert to join our team of two Conservation Officers. The successful candidate will help deliver an effective and efficient heritage and conservation service. You will be responsible for completing and maintaining a Buildings at Risk Register, the preparation and review of Conservation Area Appraisals and management plans, playing a key role in the delivery of heritage led regeneration projects, maintaining the Council’s register of buildings of local historic interest, preparing a Historic Environment Appraisal, and providing technical support for the preparation of the new Local Plan, master-planning and other planning guidance. The successful candidate will also have caseload of applications for Listed Building Consent and respond to planning application consultations. You will provide timely, expert and impartial technical advice in relation to conservation matters to other departments of the Council, agencies, developers, Councillors and the general public.
The successful candidate will have demonstrable experience in working with listed buildings and conservation areas and the practical conservation of the historic environment. You will have effective time management, excellent communication skills and be committed to providing a customer focused service, have knowledge of standard IT packages and be able to work both independently and as part of a team. You will need to be able to travel around the district.
You will be required to have a degree or other recognised qualification in one or more of the appropriate disciplines, including historic building conservation, design, architecture or planning. If a planning degree is your sole qualification, we would expect your course content to have had a significant element in one of the above design disciplines. Membership of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation would be advantageous.
