Community gathers to mark VE Day 80 at Phoenix House
On Thursday 8 May 2025, the 80th Anniversary of VE Day, we came together as a community to remember and honour the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of all those who served during the Second World War.
A welcome by the Chair of Mid Devon District Council, Cllr Gordon Czapiewski, began the VE Day 80 flag raising ceremony, followed by opening prayers by Reverend Andy Humm.
Attendees from The Royal British Legion, Devon County Council, Mid Devon District Council, Tiverton Town Council, Cadets, Devon and Cornwall Police, ACE Tiverton School and members of the public paid tribute and remembered those who fought and died during the War.
Raising of the VE Day 80 flag and a moving the ‘Last Post’ bugle performance was followed by a 2 minute’s silence marking a moment of reflection and gratitude for those who fought and sacrificed for the nation's freedom during World War II.
Chair of Mid Devon District Council, Councillor Gordon Czapiewski said:
‘This was my first engagement as the Chair of Mid Devon District Council. It was a poignant but celebratory occasion, and it was great to see some young faces, marking the occasion with us. Congratulations to Isabelle whose artwork captured the spirit of remembrance and celebration brilliantly.’
Thanks go to everyone who took part in the celebrations, Mr Colin Horn (Tiverton Poppy Appeal), Mr Nick Savage (Tiverton Royal British Legion) and Councillor Claudette Harrower (Mid Devon’s Armed Forces Champion).
A wonderful moment for Isabelle Shaw (age 6), the winner of the VE Day Poster competition, as Councillor Gordon Czapiewski announced her name.
