Mid Devon receives update on Local Government Reorganisation
Mid Devon District Council has received an update from Government on plans for Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) in Devon.
The Government has announced that its previous decision on Local Government Reorganisation for Devon, Plymouth and Torbay has been withdrawn.
Following the pause announced in September, the Government has today (29 October) confirmed its commitment to reorganisation. All existing options and proposals remain under consideration, with an outcome promised for every remaining area by early next year.
The announcement means the future structure of local government in Devon has yet to be settled. District council elections will go ahead in May 2027 on existing boundaries. The Government’s revised timetable provides for elections to shadow councils in May 2028, ahead of new councils being established in 2029.
Councillor David Wulff, Leader of Mid Devon District Council, said:
“Taking a fresh decision provides an opportunity to look again at the evidence and ensure that the needs of Devon’s communities are properly reflected in the outcome.
“We have consistently emphasised the importance of respecting local identity, protecting the voice of our towns and villages, and ensuring that any new councils can deliver sustainable services across both urban and rural areas. Those priorities will continue to guide our approach.
“We will continue to work constructively with government and colleagues across Devon, making the case for arrangements that serve our communities well. In the meantime, our focus remains on delivering the services residents and businesses rely on, supporting our staff and keeping people informed as further details become available.”
Residents should continue to access Mid Devon District Council services as usual. The Council will provide further updates as more information is confirmed.
