The Animal Welfare (Primate Licences) regulations 2024 came into force from 6th April 2026.

It requires that anyone who keeps or owns a Primate must be licensed by their local authority.  The legislation was brought in to protect and improve the welfare of primates in captivity.  Primates including monkeys, marmosets, lemurs and lorises, as well as others.

The keeping of primates without a licence is now a criminal offence.  Mid Devon District Council are responsible for administering, monitoring of compliance and enforcement of the Primate Licence Regulations.
