A Local Housing Needs Assessment was completed for Mid Devon in September 2022. This is not a Council policy document, but is a technical assessment that includes information about the need for new homes in the district, including by house type, size and tenure (market and affordable homes). This technical information can be used by the Council, together with other technical evidence and studies about development viability and land availability for example, to help inform the preparation of a new Local Plan for the district. It can also be used to help inform the preparation of other plans, programmes and strategies.

In September 2024 an update was prepared to include a jobs and workers balance assessment for the local authorities in the Exeter area, including Mid Devon.

It is intended to update the evidence further, by preparing a Housing and Employment Needs Assessment. This will consider the impact of the new standard method for housing need as well as other, more detailed aspects of housing need. It will also consider the need for employment development, including any links between the two.
