Update April 2020

Covid-19 and impact on the Planning Service’s community engagement

The Council’s Statement of Community Involvement sets out the Council’s approach to consultation and public participation when local plans or supplementary planning documents are prepared and planning applications considered.

Covid-19 places a significant risk to public health. Current Government advice is that people stay at home and should only go outside for food, exercise, health reasons or work (if you cannot work from home).

The imperative for social distancing has meant that the Planning Service is currently unable to meet all of the requirements of its Statement of Community Involvement. Therefore, until further notice we are not holding face to face public consultation events, or other activities which may pose a risk to public health. We will not be making printed copies of consultation documents, including live planning applications available at the Council’s Phoenix House office (which has restricted opening hours) or in local libraries (which remain closed). Consultation documents and planning applications are available to view free of charge on the Council’s website. We are currently investigating the use of powers to hold virtual (on-line) meetings for the Planning Committee and will implement this as soon as practicable. This situation will be kept under review and follow further Government advice that may be provided over the coming weeks.

The Council is continuing to provide a full planning service. While officers are working away from the Council’s Phoenix House office and cannot receive incoming telephone calls, they can be contacted by email and will be in touch as soon as possible.

We hope that you will understand the decisions that we have needed to make and wish you safe and well in this extraordinary and difficult time.

The Statement of Community Involvement (SCI) was adopted by Mid Devon District Council on 26 October 2016. It replaces the SCI adopted in 2012. The SCI was subject to a six week public consultation from the 23 May 2016 – 18 July 2016. A total of 14 valid representations were received and have been considered when producing the final document.
