You can get rural rate relief if your business is in one of our listed rural settlements, and is:

  • the only general store, food shop or post office with a rateable value of up to £8,500
  • the only public house or petrol station with a rateable value of up to £12,500

In the 2016 Autumn Statement the government confirmed the doubling of rural rate relief for eligible businesses from 50% to 100%. Local authorities are required to use their local discount powers to grant 100% rural rate relief to eligible ratepayers until the government have changed the law to make it “mandatory”

We can also:

  • give relief to other rural retail businesses of up to 100% (for properties with a rateable value under £16,500) – please note this relief was not part of the government change as such remains discretionary to the Local Authority.

See our Rural Settlements List.
