Ways to reduce food waste
There are a number of ways to reduce the amount of food waste you put out for collection:
- Planning meals, storing food properly, and getting creative with leftovers can significantly cut down on food waste. Before grocery shopping, check your cupboards and fridge to avoid buying duplicates.
- Composting is a sustainable way to manage food scraps and enrich garden soil. Turn your fruit peels, coffee grounds, and veggie scraps into nutrient-rich compost to benefit your garden and reduce landfill waste.
- Community fridges are a great way to fight food waste and hunger. Donate your excess food and take what you need, supporting those around you and minimising waste.
- Keep an eye on expiration dates and prioritise eating foods that are closer to their 'best by' dates. Store these items in a visible spot in your fridge to ensure they are used in time.
- “Ugly” produce is still nutritious and delicious. Don’t judge fruits and veggies by their appearance – they deserve a place on your plate.
To further support sustainable practices at home, consider ordering an additional kerbside food caddy to help store food waste, and reduce contamination within refuse and recycling.
