Air Quality Management Areas (AQMA)

Following our work undertaken in local air quality management, we have designated two formal Air Quality Management Areas (AQMA), where specific pollutants exceed Government air quality targets. These are at roadside locations where residents live and the major source of these pollutants is road transport.

The first AQMA to be designated was for Exeter Road and the High Street in Crediton, in September 2004. We have published our Air Quality Action Plan setting out our measures to improve air quality in these areas. The second AQMA was designated for parts of Station Road, Higher Street and Fore Street in Cullompton, in December 2006. We have also produced an Air Quality Action Plan for Cullompton.

For further information about the AQMAs, please download the Crediton or Cullompton Air Quality Management leaflets in the Downloads section.

Real-time air quality monitoring

The monitoring station at Exeter Road, Crediton, will continue to provide real time data for particulates from January which will appear on this site. Our network of NOx tube monitoring in the town will also remain in place and those results will be published annually in our air quality status reports available below.

Please Note: The nitrogen dioxide (NO2) monitor at Crediton has been decommissioned forthwith as it is approaching the end if its operational life. It was originally installed to show daily and seasonal trends and to validate our rolling-monthly NOx tube monitoring for nitrogen dioxide. Long-term monitoring, including over two-years of data following the opening of the Crediton Link Road means trend is now better understood. Formal guidance also requires us to now use national bias adjustment factors for NOx tubes which means overall that local real-time NO2 monitoring is no longer required in this way and therefore the monitor will not be replaced.

We will continue to monitor for particulates and the real time results from the monitoring station will still appear on this site. Our network of NOx tube monitoring in the town will also remain in place and those results will be published annually in our air quality status reports available below.
