In Mid Devon we have written appraisals for some but unfortunately not all, of our conservation areas. Some also have management plans - identifying where changes and improvements would be welcome and where improvements schemes could take place (if funding is available).

Conservation Area Appraisals are written for several reasons:

  • To understand more fully the character and special interest of the area
  • To promote the special interest of the area to everyone
  • To consult with the public about what they feel is special about their area and incorporate this into the documents
  • To include elements such as landscape, archaeology, history, special features of interest and good unlisted buildings
  • To provide helpful guidance to members of the public who might wish to make planning applications
  • To provide useful documentation to refer to when making planning decisions
  • To defend these planning decisions at appeal
